Larry and Ita's dance classes
On Monday 10th January we began a term of dance lessons with Larry and Ita Southard, as part of our P.E. classes. From the start everyone had a fun time, enjoying the dances and getting some great exercise!
We finished off the lessons with a dance show in Conna Hall, which went down very well with everyone. We were joined by many of the childrens' parents which was a brilliant opportunity to show the enjoyment and benefits of dance.
Health Promoting Schools
We were formally recognised as a Health Promoting School by the HSE in 2008. This achievement followed many years of hard work by pupils, staff and parents. We are lucky to have a very healthy school now, with a big focus on bringing healthy lunches (again, both pupils and staff!). We have different coaches and teachers coming in for physical activities during the year, including a hurling/football coach, and dance lessons from Larry and Ita Southard. First to Sixth class also complete a term of swimming lessons in Fermoy swimming pool every year.
Discovery Science Award
Food Dudes!
We were very lucky to be invited to join the Food Dudes in their fight against General Junk. We all got to try healthy lunch ideas like carrots, turnip, apples, cucumber and more. Everyone still has the chance to win Food Dudes prizes just by bringing in fruit and vegetables for lunch! http://www.fooddudes.ie/
Folk Dancing
For the past few years we have had great fun learning folk dances from around the world, with Larry and Ita Southard. They have come to our school and taught dances to each class as part of our P.E. curriculum. We have also learned a lot about the different countries where each dance originated, so we're including a geography lesson each time too! At the end of each course of lessons we have put on a dance performance for all of the parents. These have been a huge success and we had to go down to the community hall this year because we had such a big audience. We're looking forward to seeing Larry and Ita again in January 2011 for lessons in folk dance.
