Our School Garden 2016

Thanks to a huge amount of work from a fantastic Parents' Association, our school garden and yard are looking better than ever.

This year the Parents' Association paid for Sandra Kenneally to paint the benches in the school with bright, happy colours, and turn two of the benches into Buddy Benches. Children can sit on these benches to signal to others that they don't have anyone to play with.

The Parents' Association have also provided lots of colourful plants for the children throughout the school. Junior and Senior Infants had great fun planting flowers in old wellies, and some of the older classes went completely potty and used an old toilet for planting flowers!

There has also been trojan work put in by parents to clear out some of the ground and extend our garden space for the new polytunnel. The polytunnel is full of newly built worktables and plants, and children are out working with the garden daily.

This year we have entered again in the Cork County Council Pride in Community Schools Garden Competition. Judging will take place in June, and we hope to do very well this year.

The ceremony involved all the children singing, playing their tin whistles and presenting their projects. Part of the original proclamation was read and our new school proclamation, which was a collaboration of ideas from all the children in the school, was read by a group of children. The Tricolour was raised, in glorious sunshine, by two of our pupils as Amhran na bhFiann was sung by everyone.

Caterpillar Life Cycle

At the moment we have 5 caterpillars in the Junior Infant classroom. Over the next few weeks we’ll be watching the stages of their life cycle, and if we’re really lucky we’ll get to see the change from caterpillar through to butterfly. We’ll be on the lookout for different types of butterfly outside too, so you can help out with this at home if you can.

Update, 23rd May:

Our caterpillars are now all in their chrysalides and we have transferred them from their cup into the butterfly net, where they will hatch out when ready.

Update 6th June:

We now have four beautiful painted ladies in our butterfly net. Unfortunately one of the chrysalides is not showing any signs of movement so we don't think it will hatch out.
